Thiruvananthapuram known as Trivandrum, is the capital of the Indian state of Kerala and the headquarters of the Thiruvananthapuram District. It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland. Referred to by Mahatma Gandhi as the "evergreen city of India", the city is characterised by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills and busy commercial alleys. The city has a population of 957,730 inhabitants and a population of around 1.68 million in the urban agglomeration, making it one of the largest urban agglomeration in Kerala. It is the largest city of the Indian state of Kerala. It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland. It is classified as a Tier-II city by the Government of India. It has referred as the “Evergreen city of India” by Mahatma Gandhi. It remained as a princely state ruled by Travancore under the loose governance of the British before joining the Indian Union in 1948.
