About Hastinapur

About

Hastinapur is a city in the Meerut district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Described in Hindu texts (Mahabharata and Puranas) as the capital of Kuru Kingdom, the city also finds its mention in the ancient Jain texts.

In Sanskrit, Hastinapur essentially means the city of elephants: Hastina (elephant) + puram (city). Its history dates back to the period of Mahabharata. Several claims suggests that the city was named after King Hasti, Hastinapur has also been called by other names, such as Gajapuram, Nagapura, Asandivata, Brahmasthalam, Shanti Nagaram and Kunjarpuram in different ancient texts.
