Among the other names of Ganesha the name Vignaharta justifies his nature of removing any obstacle. He is considered the Lord of wisdom, talent, power, prosperity, and joy all over the world. He is also the elder son of Lord Shiva. Mother usually wishes to have the sole virtues of the Lord Ganesha in their children and that is why the festival is celebrated with full honesty and dedication. There is an interesting tale that has made Lord Ganesha so popular in Hindu mythology.

Once upon a time, Parvati created a human idol while taking a bath from some balm and unguent and gave him life. She asked him to guard the door while she took a bath. Meantime, Lord Shiva thought of meeting and seeing the half-life partner but, he was then stopped by Ganesha at the door. Lord Shiva became angry and cut off his head in the outrage. He later discovered that it was none other than the son of Parvati. So, to enrage his wife Lord Shiva ordered his attendants to get him the head of any creature that might be sleeping with head in north. They found nothing except an elephant. Thus, it was sacrificed and Shiva put the head on the dead body of Ganesha to give him the next life.

In fact, Lord Ganesha was welcomed by the family of Hindus in the heavens and he was elected as the top attendants of Shiva. He was then renamed Ganapati which literally means the head of all the ganas or attendants of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu beliefs, Ganesha was born on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month, which means it was Chaturthi of Magha month in the Hindu calendar.
